Veganism

Recently, I started trying to become a Vegan.

‘Veganism’ is everywhere. I saw it all over social media and, honestly, I was intrigued. I was always a meat-eater before and never really considered turning Vegan before. I’d spoken about how much I’d like to do it to my mum, after reading into the animal cruelty side and the health benefits it can give you. I didn’t make a slow adjustment into it either. My mum and I went out to breakfast one day and there was a vegan menu. I picked a vegan breakfast and didn’t stop after that.

I was kind of concerned about the whole “being vegan in so expensive” argument. After doing my weekly food shop for university, I actually realised that the price was no different to what I would normally spend. Good start.

I’m also a massive Made in Chelsea fan, so obviously I ordered Lucy Watson’s vegan cookbook (the vegan brownies are something from heaven, I swear). Before this, I could make little more than chicken nuggets. But since turning vegan, I’ve been cooking a lot more from scratch. To my surprise, I’m actually pretty good at it and I enjoy it! I find it a lot of fun to experiment with different flavours and Lucy’s cookbook helped me re-create my old favourite dishes but vegan! (I made a tasty carbonara tonight from her book which was lush).

There’s also vegan substitutes for nearly everything too! I use vegan cheese and almond milk which honestly makes 0 difference taste wise!

I’ve also found my new favourite snack, fried Kale. It sounds totally weird but I’m slightly addicted.

I also feel a lot healthier as instead of just chucking a pizza in the oven I’m cooking with more fruits and veg. Who knew I liked Aubergine?

If you’re thinking about making the switch, personally I really recommend it! I love feeling like I’m doing something good for animals and its made me a better cook too! Try a making a Vegan dish and see what you think! You might find yourself surprised at how much you like it, like me.
